Coastal Middle School

Fall Leadership Conference

On November 16-18, 2007 eight students from Coastal Middle School attended the 46th annual Technology Student Association's Fall Leadership Conference.  Held on Jekyll Island, the conference is a precursor to the state conference held each spring.  The students participated in technical sessions such as leadership, teambuilding, structural engineering, and video game design.  These conference-style classes enhance the students' leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as providing instruction for future competitive events.  The students also participated in the Boat Armada on Saturday night.  This annual event requires a team of students from each school to design and build a cardboard boat that will be paddled across a pool, hopefully without sinking.  Each team is given 30 minutes to build the boat.  Representing Coastal in this event was Isabella Axelsson, Sarah Gattis, and Patrick Glenn.  They built their boat in 28 minutes, and Coastal won third place in the event.  Four students also took and passed the test for the coveted Statesman Award, which allows students to run for a state office.  Isabella Axelsson, Joseph Frankosky, Patrick Glenn, and Tamar Nowell each took the test and received a Statesman Award pin to wear to future conferences.  Coastal Middle School continues to excell in the Technology Student Association events, and the students again brought home the prize!
